Views over Thur
The Holey Soles hill walking group, in conjunction with guide Dave Lawless would like to invite you to our annual Fr. Ed charity walk on Sunday Oct 6th.
The walks will take place in Glenfarne, Co. Leitrim with registration at St. Michael’s National School from 10.30am. The hill walk departs at 11.00am and the ramble at 11.15am. Carparking will be available at nearby St. Michael’s Church, Glenfarne. Directions HERE
Fr. Ed O'Connell who managed the projects in Peru for several years will be joining us on the day.
Ramble
The ramble will be an easy 8km walk along the scenic Barrs Line where walkers will enjoy panoramic views of Glenfarne valley, Thur Mountain and Cuilcagh Mountain in the distance.
Hill Walk
The hill walk is 10km and follows an historic route over Thur Mountain, walking alongside Cullentra Lake, crossing Middle Thur and Thur Mór and returning the same way. Walkers will enjoy great views of Sliabh an Iarainn, Cuilcagh Mountain and Lough MacNean. Walkers will be shuttled by minibus to the start of the walk at McManus Quarry.
We will be following the route taken in pre-famine times by locals carrying the coffins of their loved ones to Kilmakerril Graveyard. Stories are told of people being so weak from hunger they were unable to finish the journey and had to bury their dead on the mountain. You can learn more about this history in a video, ‘Kilmakerrill Graveyard’ recently produced by Leitrim County Council’s Heritage Office which we will show after the walk. Complimentary refreshments will be served after both walks. The Warmi Huasi Project, run by the Columban Missionaries in Peru, works with vulnerable children and adolescents at risk of poverty and violence by providing a range of supports and programmes. For more information visit WARMI HUASI . If you can't make the walk but would like to contribute, you can do so by buying a ticket on our Eventbrite page HERE. 100% of the funds raised on the day goes to the charity.
Sorry, dogs strictly not allowed.
Please wear suitble walking boots and wet gear. For those doing the hill walk, a hot drink and lunch are advised.
